Medhananda (1908–1994), born as Fritz Winkelstoeter in Germany, at home in Western culture due to his origins and classical humanistic education, familiar with the partially still Stone Age culture of Polynesia through the years he spent there (1934-1951), deeply connected with Eastern spiritual culture through his long stay in India at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram (1952-1994), and, in addition, a profound expert of Egyptian culture thanks to his lifelong research on the symbolism of ancient cultures — not only found messages of inner experience and differentiated self-knowledge in ancient Egypt, but also in the images, myths, and fairy tales of many other ancient cultures. The wise men and seers of those times expressed their rich psychological knowledge in symbols. His aim was to make this ancient symbolic language comprehensible and accessible to us again, so that we might better perceive ourselves and unfold our many soul powers.
Yvonne Artaud (1924–2009) was Medhananda’s partner, co-editor of the Equals One magazines and collaborator in all his research work into ancient Egypt. Born in Lyon, France, she was a dental surgeon for young children in Paris before she joined the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1952. There she painted and wrote poetry and plays. From 1963 onwards she was involved in research on the psychology of self-awareness, especially in pre-school children and South Indian primates. Author of numerous studies on animal psychology, as well as early childhood education, she is the creator of several innovative teaching-learning materials.
